Hotel amenities lists usually read like a promise: Wi-Fi, breakfast, a pool, a gym, parking.
 We counted what 5,957 hotels in 50 cities actually list on Google Hotels, and only Wi-Fi is close to everywhere (99.6%).
 A pool and a gym are coin tosses, at 47% and 54%.
 And in the US, the more a hotel costs, the less of it is free: breakfast is free at 85% of 2-star hotels that serve it, and at 6.5% of 5-star hotels.
 This post counts facilities and services, the amenities a listing shows, rather than the toiletries in the bathroom.
 We read the amenity lists of the first 150 hotels Google Hotels shows in each city (29 in the US, 21 elsewhere) on October 25, 2026.

## Key Takeaways

- **Wi-Fi is the one universal hotel amenity, listed at 99.6% of hotels and free at 96% of them.** Air conditioning (93.5%) and a front desk (90.3%) come next; everything else is missing from nearly 1 listing in 5 or more.
- **A pool and a gym are coin tosses.** 47.1% of hotels list a pool and 52.3% say they have none; 53.6% list a fitness center.
- **In the US, the dearer the hotel, the less is free.** Breakfast is free at 85.0% of US 2-star hotels that serve it and 6.5% of US 5-stars, and parking is charged at 14.9% of US 2-stars and 70.7% of 4-stars; elsewhere, free breakfast stays between 21% and 30% in every class.
- **Only 5-star hotels have a long standard list.** At 90% or more of 5-stars: Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a front desk, parking, breakfast, a restaurant, and room service; at 3 and 4 stars, only the first three.
- **US hotels list the gym and the microwave; hotels elsewhere, the airport shuttle.** Fitness centers sit at 71% of US hotels against 32% elsewhere, airport shuttles at 13% against 47%; our [hotel check-in time study](https://stayapi.com/blog/hotel-check-in-time) covers the same 50 cities' arrival times.

## The Most Common Hotel Amenities

Three amenities come close to universal: Wi-Fi (99.6% of hotels), air conditioning (93.5%), and a front desk (90.3%).
 After that, every amenity is missing from the listings of nearly 1 hotel in 5 or more.

![Only Wi-Fi is everywhere: the most common hotel amenities](/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6ODY2LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--14ceafde58139fab1b8ba807e96f9d3a6fccf759/chart_most_common_amenities.png?disposition=inline)

| Amenity | Hotels that list it | Listed as not available |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wi-Fi | 99.6% | 0.2% |
| Air conditioning | 93.5% | 3.0% |
| Front desk | 90.3% | |
| Parking | 81.0% | 10.3% |
| Breakfast | 74.2% | 13.6% |
| Accessible | 70.8% | 9.6% |
| Restaurant | 63.0% | |
| Housekeeping | 60.1% | |
| Elevator | 58.0% | |
| Fitness center | 53.6% | 42.9% |
| Pool | 47.1% | 52.3% |
| Pets allowed | 43.0% | 48.8% |
| Bar | 42.7% | |

The second column matters as much as the first.
 Google lists some amenities as explicitly absent, and for a pool (52.3%), pets (48.8%), and a gym (42.9%), the "no" is nearly as common as the "yes".
**If a pool or a gym decides your booking, check for it; half the market doesn't have one.**
 Some labels describe the hotel more than its facilities: 76.9% list themselves as smoke-free and 71.5% as kid-friendly.
 A typical hotel lists 28 amenities (3 stars) to 40 (5 stars), though 2-star hotels list a median of only 14.

## Hotel Amenities List by Star Rating

![Whiteboard sketch of four hotel listing cards: the amenities listed at 90% or more of hotels grow from Wi-Fi alone at 2 stars to seven at 5 stars | StayAPI](/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6ODY3LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--8aa329d03c046ee0d07c9be556e6816850845de2/hotel_amenities_list_by_star_rating_b.png?disposition=inline)

Class decides most of what you'll find, and the standard list (amenities at 90% or more of hotels) is short until 5 stars.

| Amenity | 2-star | 3-star | 4-star | 5-star |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Wi-Fi | 99% | 100% | 100% | 100% |
| Air conditioning | 89% | 96% | 98% | 98% |
| Parking | 73% | 82% | 85% | 95% |
| Breakfast | 52% | 76% | 84% | 93% |
| Restaurant | 34% | 62% | 78% | 95% |
| Fitness center | 23% | 56% | 68% | 88% |
| Pool | 35% | 52% | 49% | 82% |
| Bar | 9% | 33% | 63% | 85% |
| Room service | 6% | 15% | 51% | 91% |
| Spa | 1% | 3% | 17% | 66% |

At 2 stars, only Wi-Fi reaches 90%.
 At 3 and 4 stars, air conditioning and a front desk join it.
 At 5 stars, the list grows to seven: Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a front desk, parking, breakfast, a restaurant, and room service.
 The jumps sit in different places for different amenities.
 A restaurant becomes common at 3 stars (62%), a bar and room service at 4 (63% and 51%), and a spa only at 5 (66%).
 The pool splits by region: in the US, 67% of 3-star hotels list one against 55% of 4-stars, while elsewhere the share doubles from 22% to 44% and reaches 85% at 5 stars.
 Three quarters of the 5-star hotels here are outside the US, so the 5-star column leans on them; at US 5-stars, breakfast (80%), room service (82%), and a restaurant (85%) fall just short of 90%.
 Our [3-star vs 4-star hotel study](https://stayapi.com/blog/3-star-vs-4-star-hotel) has what that one step changes in the US and elsewhere, and what it costs.

## Which Hotel Amenities Are Free?

Google marks three amenities as free or extra charge often enough to count: Wi-Fi, parking, and breakfast.
 Most 2-star hotels in our sample are in the US and most 5-stars are elsewhere, so we split each class by region.

![In the US, free breakfast falls from 85% at 2 stars to 7% at 5](/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6ODY4LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--f23b320b65a8009e2c07e349d3267a4f3db08f15/chart_free_vs_paid_by_star.png?disposition=inline)

**Wi-Fi is free almost everywhere** : at 95.9% of the hotels that list it, against 3.0% that charge.
 The exceptions sit at US 4- and 5-star hotels, where 14.0% and 15.8% charge for it.
 At every other class in the US, and at every class elsewhere, 1.6% or fewer charge.
**In the US, breakfast flips with class.**
 At US 2-star hotels that serve it, it's free 85.0% of the time; at 3 stars, 67.1%; at 4 stars, 25.5%; at 5 stars, 6.5%, while 80.5% of US 5-stars charge for it.
 Elsewhere, free breakfast stays between 20.9% and 30.0% in every class, and most hotels that serve it charge (from 47.7% at 2 stars to 63.2% at 5).
 Across all classes, breakfast is free at 54.5% of US hotels that serve it, against 24.5% elsewhere.
**US parking runs the same way.**
 It's free at 77.7% of US 2-star hotels that offer it and charged at 70.7% of US 4-stars and 71.9% of 5-stars.
 Elsewhere, parking is free at about half of hotels from 2 to 4 stars (48.4% to 52.9%) and at 66.3% of 5-stars, rising to nine in ten or more in Pattaya, Phuket, Bali, Bangkok, and Dubai.
 So in the US, the price gap between classes runs wider than the room rate shows.
 A US 2- or 3-star hotel with free breakfast and parking can cost less for the stay than the rate difference suggests; our [average hotel price study](https://stayapi.com/blog/average-cost-hotel-room) has what the room itself costs in each city.

## Luxury Hotel Amenities List: What 5-Star Hotels Add

![Whiteboard sketch of the services cards in a 3-star and a 5-star hotel room: room service is listed at 15% of 3-star hotels and 91% of 5-stars | StayAPI](/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6ODY5LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--03f04296a489937a64758c8c36a3cd27ff484f0a/luxury_hotel_amenities_list_what_5_star_hotels_add_a.png?disposition=inline)

These amenities are at least twice as common at 5 stars as at 3, and listed at a quarter or more of 5-star hotels:

| Amenity | 3-star | 5-star |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Room service | 15% | 91% |
| Full-service laundry | 25% | 86% |
| Bar | 33% | 85% |
| Concierge | 19% | 67% |
| Spa | 3% | 66% |
| Valet parking | 11% | 54% |
| Airport shuttle | 23% | 55% |
| Massage | 3% | 52% |
| Minibar | 5% | 51% |
| Sauna | 3% | 47% |
| Turndown service | 8% | 45% |

The pattern is staff and wellness: someone to bring food up, press a shirt, park the car, and turn down the bed, plus a spa and a sauna.
 It holds in the US and elsewhere, with one exception: the airport shuttle rises from 38.5% of 3-star hotels to 69.6% of 5-stars outside the US, and falls from 15.9% to 7.3% in the US.
 Two amenities seem to go the other way at the top, and both mostly reflect where the 5-star hotels are.
 Smoke-free falls from 82.6% of 3-star hotels to 56.7% of 5-stars across the sample, largely because three quarters of the 5-stars sit outside the US, where fewer hotels list it.
 Within each region the drop is smaller: from 94.6% to 86.5% in the US, and from 58.2% to 47.6% elsewhere.
 Pets allowed looks like it peaks at 3 stars (48.2%), yet in the US it rises with class, from 42.1% of 2-star hotels to 72.9% of 5-stars, and elsewhere it stays near a fifth in every class.
 So a US luxury hotel is more likely than a budget one to take your dog.

## US Hotels vs Hotels Elsewhere

US hotels and hotels elsewhere list different things.

![US hotels list the gym; hotels elsewhere, the airport shuttle](/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6ODcwLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--8f31f295f65af83684438caef3aac37a9b03e17d/chart_us_vs_elsewhere.png?disposition=inline)

US hotels lean toward self-service.
 They list a microwave (46.1% against 9.9% elsewhere, in all or some rooms), a fitness center (71.4% against 32.4%), self-service laundry (45.0% against 14.1%), and parking (95.4% against 63.8%).
 They also list accessibility (88.5% against 49.7%) and pet policies (59.0% against 23.9%) far more often, which may say as much about what US listings fill in as about the buildings.
 The gym gap is a real "no" rather than a blank: 63.4% of hotels elsewhere list no fitness center, against 25.7% in the US.
 Booking.com's room listings for 10 of these cities agree on the microwave (44.2% of US hotels against 14.6% elsewhere), so US hotels list one 3 to 5 times as often.
 Booking.com doesn't show a gap for the coffee maker, which it lists at about two thirds of hotels in both regions, so we leave the coffee maker out.
 Hotels elsewhere lean toward service.
 They list an airport shuttle (46.9% against 12.7% in the US), full-service laundry (53.6% against 22.8%), room service (40.6% against 20.2%), a minibar (23.2% against 5.2%), and a spa (18.5% against 6.1%).
 Part of that is class, since more of the hotels elsewhere are 4- and 5-stars: weighted to the US mix of classes, room service elsewhere falls to 32.6%, still above the US.
 Booking.com agrees on the minibar too (42.2% of hotels elsewhere against 9.2% in the US).
 One caution on all of these: listings outside the US are shorter.
 A 3-star hotel lists a median of 14 amenities elsewhere against 34 in the US, and Google never marks most of these items as missing, so an amenity a hotel leaves off counts as absent.
 At 5 stars, where lists are the same length (40 items in both), the airport shuttle, full-service laundry, and spa still lean elsewhere and the microwave still leans US (25.0% against 17.6%), while the gym and the minibar even out.
**Breakfast shows both sides at once** : about as common in both (72.6% of US hotels, 76.2% elsewhere), but free at 54.5% of the US hotels that serve it and 24.5% elsewhere.
 For a traveler from the US, the habit that breaks most often abroad is the free breakfast.

## For Hotels: Benchmarking Your Amenity List

![Whiteboard sketch of four US 4-star hotel listings where only one offers free breakfast, captioned free breakfast at 1 in 4 US 4-stars | StayAPI](/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6ODcxLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--ed12635d2e90f6c318b805c2d77b4f15f5083164/for_hotels_benchmarking_your_amenity_list_a.png?disposition=inline)

For a hotel team, the counts say what guests in your class and region will expect to see listed:
 - **The 90% list is the floor for your class.** Missing Wi-Fi, air conditioning, or a front desk puts a 3- or 4-star listing in the bottom tenth; a 5-star without room service or a restaurant stands out.
 - **Free versus paid is a positioning choice.** Free breakfast at a 4-star (25.5% of those serving it in the US, 21.4% elsewhere) separates you from most of the class; charging for Wi-Fi puts you in a visible minority (14.0% of US 4-stars, 0.6% of 4-stars elsewhere).
 - **Unlisted counts as unknown to a guest.** An amenity your listing doesn't show doesn't exist in the comparison, even if the hotel has it.
 What we didn't measure is how much each amenity moves bookings or rates; that needs your own booking data next to the market's.
 StayAPI reads the same Google Hotels amenity lists for a comp set, and the [Google Hotels API page](https://stayapi.com/apis/google-hotels) lists the endpoints.

## How We Counted 5,957 Hotels' Amenities

We searched Google Hotels for "hotels in" each of 50 cities and kept the first 150 hotels in Google's order; 5,957 of them had an amenity list.
 A hotel's page on Google Hotels groups its amenities (Internet, Food & drink, Parking & transportation, and so on), marks some free or extra charge, and lists some as not available.
 StayAPI's [Google Hotels info endpoint](https://stayapi.com/docs/endpoints/google-travel/info) returns all three, using the `entity_token` the search gives each hotel:

```
curl -G "https://api.stayapi.com/v1/google_travel/info" \
  -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -d entity_token=ChgI5LKPgKOt3q2OARoLL2cvMXRmXzFwNXAQAQ \
  -d gl=us \
  -d hl=en
```

The answer for the Best Western Plus Hawthorne Terrace Hotel in Chicago, truncated:

```
{
  "place_name": "Best Western Plus Hawthorne Terrace Hotel",
  "hotel_class": { "label": "3-star hotel", "stars": 3 },
  "amenities": ["Wi-Fi", "Restaurant", "Bar", "Breakfast", "Parking", "Fitness center", "Pet-friendly", "Air conditioning"],
  "excluded_amenities": ["Pool", "Spa"],
  "amenity_groups": [
    { "title": "Food & drink", "items": [{ "name": "Breakfast", "note": "free", "available": true }] },
    { "title": "Parking & transportation", "items": [{ "name": "Parking", "note": "extra charge", "available": true }] }
  ]
}
```

| Field | Example | What it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `amenities` | Wi-Fi, Breakfast | Amenities the listing shows as available |
| `excluded_amenities` | Pool, Spa | Amenities the listing shows as not available |
| `amenity_groups[].items[].note` | free, extra charge | Whether an amenity is free or costs extra |

We counted each hotel once per amenity, merged Google's variants (pool, outdoor pool, and indoor pool count as a pool; a microwave or coffee maker "in some rooms" counts as one), and left out languages spoken.
 The vacation rentals Google shows among its hotel results have no amenity list, so none are counted.
 The limits:
 - These are listed amenities: a hotel can have more than its listing shows, and the listing can be out of date.
 - Unrated places mostly have no amenity list (69.6% of them), so the study leans on hotels with a class.
 - Listings outside the US are shorter, so an amenity a hotel leaves off counts as missing; the US-against-elsewhere gaps are differences in what listings show.
 - The first 150 hotels in Google's order lean toward well-ranked hotels.
 - Most 2-star hotels here are in the US and most 5-stars elsewhere, so free-vs-paid figures are split by region.
