Average Cost of a Hotel Room: What a Night Costs in 50 Cities
This study prices 5,918 hotels in 50 cities for the same two November nights and reports the average cost of a hotel room by city, by night of the week, and by star class.
Table of contents

The average cost of a hotel room in our November 2026 sample was $144 a night: the median lowest price across 5,651 hotels in 50 cities, for a Tuesday, before taxes.
Saturday ran higher at $171.
Add taxes and the two nights come to $168 and $200.
City medians ranged from $45 in Pattaya to $372 in New York.
We priced the first 150 TripAdvisor results in each city for Tuesday, November 10 and Saturday, November 14, 2026, on October 15, about 4 weeks ahead.
Below are the full city table, the gap between the two nights, what each star class costs, and the US figures next to the industry benchmark.
Key Takeaways
- The median hotel night cost $144 on a Tuesday and $171 on a Saturday. The mean was higher ($188 on the Tuesday), pulled up by the 227 hotels priced at $500 or more, so this study reports medians. Our hotel market data pages track 25 of these cities live.
- New York was the priciest city at $372, and Pattaya the cheapest at $45. Only 5% of New York hotels priced under $200 on the Tuesday, against 95% in Bangkok.
- US hotels cost more than hotels abroad, and the gap widens at the top. The US median was $152 against $132 in 21 international cities, and a US 5-star night cost $522 against $193 abroad.
- The same hotel cost a median 10% more on Saturday. Saturday ran more than 5% higher in 28 cities, while San Francisco, Atlanta, and Minneapolis got cheaper.
- Taxes added a median 16.5%. Amsterdam added the most (34%) and Pattaya the least (9%).
- 70% of hotels cost under $200 on the Tuesday. That makes $200 an upper-middle price across the sample and a budget night in New York.
The Average Cost of a Hotel Room, by City

The chart ranks all 50 cities by their median Tuesday price, and each bar shows where the middle half of that city's hotels landed.
A few results stand out:
- London ($247) was the only international city in the top 7; the other six were American.
- Osaka cost half as much as Tokyo on the Tuesday ($86 against $173).
- San Francisco ($155) came in under Nashville ($160) and Austin ($173).
- Las Vegas was a weekday bargain at $119, until Saturday (more on that below).

In Portland it ran from $82 to $137.
Average Hotel Price per Night: Weekday vs Saturday

For the 5,300 hotels priced on both nights, Saturday's lowest rate ran a median 10% above Tuesday's.
Hotel by hotel, 58% charged more than 5% extra on the Saturday, 22% charged more than 5% less, and 20% stayed within 5%.
Of those 5,300, 467 (9%) at least doubled their rate.
The Saturday premium shrank as star class rose: +14% at 2 stars, +15% at 3, +9% at 4, and under 1% at 5.
City by city, the medians split three ways.
In 28 cities, Saturday cost more than 5% extra, and 18 of them were in the US.
Leisure markets led: Las Vegas (+81%), Gatlinburg (+74%), Miami (+51%), and Nashville (+50%).
In 19 cities, the two nights priced within a few percent of each other, and 11 of them were outside the US.
In 7 of those, the median hotel charged exactly the same on both nights: Dubai, Singapore, Istanbul, Antalya, Milan, Bali, and Denver.
In 3 cities, Saturday was cheaper: San Francisco (-5%), Atlanta (-10%), and Minneapolis (-16%).
Weekday business and convention demand probably sets the rate there, and it thins out on weekends.
New Orleans (+163%) and Osaka (+142%) more than doubled.
A jump that size across most of a city's hotels usually means something big is in town that weekend, so read those two as one-weekend numbers.
Fewer hotels had a bookable offer on the Saturday: 5,331, against 5,651 on the Tuesday.
How Much Does Star Class Change the Price?

Across all 50 cities, each step up in star class cost more: $83 for 2 stars, $133 for 3, $176 for 4, and $221 for 5.
Split by region, the curves part ways at the top:
| Star class | All 50 cities | US (29 cities) | International (21 cities) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-star | $83 | $83 | $87 |
| 3-star | $133 | $139 | $108 |
| 4-star | $176 | $212 | $140 |
| 5-star | $221 | $522 | $193 |
A 5-star night in the US cost 2.5 times a 4-star night.
Abroad, it cost 1.4 times as much.
Only 4% of the US hotels with a star class and a Tuesday price were 5-star (129 of 2,908), against 29% abroad (536 of 1,838).
Most international 5-star hotels in the sample sat in Bali, Dubai, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Bangkok, and their median ($193) came in below the US 4-star median ($212).
Inside a single city, the step looks much the same at home and abroad.
In the 15 cities with at least 10 hotels at both 3 and 5 stars, a 5-star night cost 2.2 to 3.9 times a 3-star night.
Boston went from $212 to $662, Rome from $144 to $502, and Kuala Lumpur from $28 to $110.
In some cities, the step from 3 to 4 stars barely moved the price.
A 4-star night cost 13% more than a 3-star night in New York, 12% more in Las Vegas, and 8% more in Washington DC.
In Charlotte and Phoenix, the 4-star median came in below the 3-star median.
Star class comes from TripAdvisor's hotel details, with half stars counted down (3.5 counts as 3).
1,055 of the 5,918 hotels had no star class and sit out of this section.
Average Cost of a Hotel Room in the USA

Across the 29 US cities, the median hotel night cost $152 on the Tuesday and $180 on the Saturday, before taxes.
With taxes, the Tuesday median came to $179.
New York ($372), Boston ($262), and Chicago ($220) topped the US list, and Kissimmee ($78), Gatlinburg ($89), and Portland ($112) closed it.
The industry benchmark for US hotel prices is ADR, average daily rate.
For the week of September 20 to 26, 2026, CoStar reported a US ADR of $179.43, up 7.4% on the same week in 2025.
The two figures measure different things.
ADR is what guests actually paid, averaged across hotels of every class nationwide, after corporate, group, and discount rates.
Our figure is the lowest public price for one future night in 29 US destinations.
Our RevPAR vs ADR guide covers how ADR is calculated and why asking rates and paid rates drift apart.
Side by side, our US Tuesday median sat about $27 below CoStar's ADR, and the Saturday median landed level with it.
ADR is an average, and our US average was $204 on the Tuesday, pulled up by New York and the luxury end.
Is $200 a Night Expensive for a Hotel?
It depends on the city, and the sample puts numbers on that:
| Share of hotels priced under (Tuesday) | US | International | All 50 cities |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | 22% | 34% | 27% |
| $150 | 49% | 58% | 53% |
| $200 | 66% | 74% | 70% |
| $300 | 84% | 89% | 87% |
| $500 | 95% | 97% | 96% |
On the Tuesday, 70% of hotels across the 50 cities priced under $200, and 87% under $300.
So $200 bought an upper-middle hotel night in most of the sample.
New York flips that.
Only 5% of its hotels came in under $200 and 28% under $300, so $300 there only reaches the cheapest 28% of rooms.
In London, 37% of hotels priced under $200, in Paris 68%, and in Bangkok 95%.
Saturday moves the line too: the Saturday median with taxes was exactly $200.
How We Priced 5,918 Hotels
In each of the 50 cities, we ran a TripAdvisor search and kept the first 150 results in the default sort, 5,918 hotels in all.
On October 15, each hotel was priced for two stays, Tuesday November 10 and Saturday November 14, 2026, for 2 adults in 1 room, in US dollars.
A hotel's price is its lowest offer across the booking sites listed for it (a median of 10 per hotel), per night and before taxes.
The same offer's total gives the with-tax figures.
TripAdvisor's search shows one fixed price range per hotel, whatever the dates.
So we pulled the hotel lists with StayAPI's TripAdvisor search endpoint and priced each night with its TripAdvisor hotel prices endpoint:

The sample has limits worth knowing before you budget off it:
- The default sort leans toward bookable, well-reviewed hotels, and 150 results is a slice of a big city's supply.
- It's one booking window, 4 weeks out, for two nights in November, and an event weekend or a different month can move a city a long way (see New Orleans and Osaka).
- Hotels with no bookable offer drop out of that night's median, which left Minneapolis and Scottsdale with prices for only about half their sample on the Tuesday.
- The live city pages on our data site use a different measure (the middle of each hotel's typical price range from search), so their figures won't match this table.
